The Tigers have been near the bottom of the league for the past few years and it doesn’t look that’s going to change in 2021. Detroit is starting to see the fruits of their patience pay off as some of the team’s top prospects made their debut last year. This year, we should see more of the Tiger’s young talent make their way to Comerica.
Key Additions: Wilson Ramos, Nomar Mazara
Key Subtractions: C.J. Cron
Detroit will once again be a bottom feeder but they’ll be a team worth watching. The team has a lot of young talent in the Minors and we should see some of that reach the Majors this year. Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal both made their debuts in 2020 and should be staples of the Tiger’s rotation from here on out. Mize struggled when he first got called up, but there’s too much talent for him not to be an above-average pitcher. Skubal was inconsistent and will need to rebound to make people believe the rebuild in Detroit was worth it. Isaac Paredes is another farmhand that saw action in the Majors last season and he struggled as well. Bounce back seasons are going to be the order of business in Detroit if they hope to make some noise.
As far as talent set to reach Detroit in 2021, Matt Manning headlines that group. Manning has serious upside as he shows great polish for a 23-year-old. His big frame and stuff portend a potential All-Star. He should find himself right in the middle of things going forward as the Tigers look to get back to competing in 2022 and beyond. There are a few pieces the Tigers have accumulated recently that are still a ways away, but I think fans will be excited with what they’ll have in the Majors from here on out.
The additions to the Major League roster are worth noting. The team isn’t going to be very good, but they at least have some legitimate talent thanks to the acquisitions of Ramos and Mazara. Detroit also added Jonathan Schoop back into the mix, giving them a solid base for their lineup. These three won’t make this club a playoff team to anything, but they will make them more watchable. All three are on one-year deals as well, meaning they could become decent trade chips if they have strong starts to their 2021 campaigns.
Tigers fans have had a rough go of it for quite some time. While the team’s record won’t be much better this season, they will at least be more entertaining. With Mize, Manning, and Skubal set to get a healthy amount of the starts the teams should at least be intriguing. If the young guns are able to impress, they may be a team worth watching come 2022.
