NFC Playoff Picture Heading into Week 17

The NFC Playoff Picture is up in the air beside the #6 seed. Week 17 will determine which teams get Bye Weeks, who the Playoffs run through, and who makes it to the Playoffs from the NFC East.

NFC

With the Minnesota Vikings locked into the #6 seed, they’re the only NFC Playoff hopeful that can rest players.

San Francisco 49ers

Seeding Possibilities: #1, #5

Week 17 Opponent: Seattle Seahawks

Incentives: Sunday Night Football will be the most important game in terms of who gets the #1 seed in the NFC. The 49ers need to win to get the #1 seed, a loss and a Vikings win puts them at the #5 seed.

The 49ers are going to give it their all in an attempt to ensure the NFC runs through San Francisco. However, they will have to shut down the returning… Beastmode.

Green Bay Packers

Seeding Possibilities: #1, #2, #3

Week 17 Opponent: Detroit Lions

Incentives: For the Playoffs to run through Lambeau, the Packers need to win and have the 49ers lose to the Seahawks. For the #2 seed, the Packers need to win and the 49ers defeat the Seahawks. OR if the Packers lose, the 49ers lose, AND the Saints lose… the Packers will have the tiebreaker over the Seahawks and Saints to remain the #2 seed. The Packers could fall to the #3 seed if they lose and the Saints win.

The Packers are a much better team than the Lions and are one of the few teams that somewhat control their destiny. They will most likely win on Sunday and be forced to cheer for the Seahawks.

New Orleans Saints

Seeding Possibilities: #2, #3

Week 17 Opponent: Carolina Panthers

Incentives: In order to get the #2 seed, the Saints will need to beat the Panthers AND the Packers and 49ers need to win. OR they earn the #2 seed with a loss of their own, a 49ers loss AND a Packers loss. The Saints will be the #3 seed if the 49ers AND Packers win OR Seahawks AND Packers win.

The Saints are most likely going to be placed into the #3 seed but that won’t stop them from trying to help their own cause.

Philadelphia Eagles

Seeding Possibilities: #4, Outside Looking In

Week 17 Opponent: New York Giants

Incentives: If the Eagles beat the Giants, they’re the #4 seed. If they lose to the Giants AND the Cowboys win, the Eagles miss the Playoffs. If the Cowboys lose, the Eagles are in.

Although they are severely hurting on the offensive side of the ball, the Eagles still have a chance to put together a Playoff run.

Seattle Seahawks

Seeding Possibilities: #1, #2, #3, #5

Week 17 Opponent: San Francisco 49ers

Incentives: Okay bear with me here.

  • Seattle Wins + Packers Loss + Saints Loss = #1 seed
  • Seattle Wins + Packers Loss + Saints Win = #2 seed
  • Seattle Wins + Packers Win + Saints Win = #3 seed
  • Seattle Loss = #5 seed

The range of outcomes for the Seahawks is easily the most dramatic in the NFC Playoff Picture. They will know their fate, for the most part, before Sunday Night Football kicks off.

Minnesota Vikings

Seeding Possibilities: #6

Week 17 Opponent: Chicago Bears

Incentives: None. The Vikings are locked into the #6 seed due to their loss to the Packers in Week 16.

The Vikings can use this week to rest players and return to full health as they will face Seattle OR New Orleans OR Green Bay in the Playoffs.

Dallas Cowboys

Seeding Possibilities: Outside Looking In, #4

Week 17 Opponent: Washington Redskins

Incentives: In order to make the NFC Playoffs, the Cowboys need to win AND have the Eagles lose.

Since the Cowboys could not take care of business against the Eagles last week, they no longer control their own destiny.
