It’s Tuesday, which can only mean one thing… we have some excellent college basketball to watch! This preview of college basketball will only cover one game, but it is a game that features 2 ranked teams. That’s right, I’m talking about #14 Oregon at #13 Memphis.
When and Where
#13 Memphis will host #14 Oregon in the Moda Center at 9:00 PM EST on ESPN. Despite Memphis being listed as the home team, as this is a Phil Knight Invitational Tournament game, the game will take place in Portland, OR. Clearly an advantage for the “away” team.
Why We’re Watching: #14 Oregon at #13 Memphis
Both of these teams have absolutely lit up the scoreboard through the first two games of the season for each squad. Memphis is averaging over 94 points per game while Oregon is averaging over 88 points. On average, college basketball teams usually score somewhere in the 50-60 point range so these teams are doing something unprecedented. The only stat that stands out and separates these squads is the blocks advantage that Memphis has over Oregon. With an average of 9(!) blocks per game, Memphis is protecting the rim with authority.
The primary reason for Memphis’ success in the paint and overall is because of 7’1 true freshman James Wiseman. A return to old-school style big-men, Wiseman rarely leaves the paint and will simply dominate anyone that dares to attack the rim. Currently averaging a double-double, Wisman is the leading scorer for Memphis and will need to continue his impressive start to the season against a much tougher opponent.
For Oregon, they have a clear-cut experience advantage as evidenced by their starting backcourt of seniors Anthony Mathis and Payton Pritchard. The senior duo is already setting career-highs across the stat sheet and will lead the Ducks into what is essentially a homecourt game against a much younger Memphis team. With Pritchard leading the way with his near triple-double average, I like the Ducks to pull out a victory and remain undefeated to start the season.
#14 Oregon: 82
#13 Memphis: 73
Leading Scorer: Payton Prichard
