Thursday Night Football kicks off of Week 9 and we have an undefeated team in action! Tonight, the Arizona Cardinals will host the undefeated San Francisco 49ers in a battle of NFC West divisional rivals.
San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals
State Farm Stadium
With the turnovers I expect to happen tonight, I can see the OVER 43.0 points (-115) and Arizona +10.5 (-110) spread being profitable. There isn’t any value in 49ers -550 on the moneyline but they are going to win so don’t bother taking Arizona as the straight-up underdog. Check your sportsbook for the best value on Jimmy Garoppolo OVER 0.5 interceptions, I suspect he tosses one tonight with Patrick Peterson lurking.
The Arizona backfield is nearly in shambles as David Johnson is nursing an injury (Questionable), Chase Edmonds suffered a significant injury last week (OUT) and newcomer Kenyon Drake probably doesn’t know the playbook yet. Other than that, the teams starting RT Justin Murray is questionable to play which will be problematic considering the impact of the 49ers pass rushers. Lastly, on defense for the Cardinals, starting lineman Zach Allen is OUT which means they’ll struggle to get pressure on Jimmy G.
Similar to the Cardinals, the 49ers backfield is hurting this week. However, both Matt Breida (Questionable) and Raheem Mostert (Questionable) are expected to play tonight. Other offensive play injuries include Joe Staley (Doubtful) and Levine Toilolo (Questionable). On defense, Ahkello Witherspoon (Questionable) is the only player listed on the injury report.
Cardinals Offense vs. 49ers Defense
This seasons #1 overall pick, Kyler Murray, has been solid despite working with a rotating chair of playmakers in this Cardinals offense. If David Johnson plays, he’ll be at less than 100% which means we’ll get a healthy dose of Kenyon Drake in his action as a member of the Cardinals. Thankfully for the Cardinals, because of their pace of play, they are able to put up big numbers on offense every single week. Unfortunately, that hasn’t generated wins and this week they face off against the #2 defense in the entire NFL.
For the 49ers defense, Nick Bosa has become one of the most elite defenders in the NFL as evidenced by his 7 sacks on opposing QBs this year. Meanwhile, Murray has been sacked 26 times this season and is without one of his starting linemen potentially. The 49ers will have to take chances tonight which will likely result in numerous turnovers.
49ers Offense vs. Cardinals Defense
All 4(!) of the 49ers running backs have been effective this season and they all serve a different role in the offense. In fact, the 49ers almost have as many rushing yards per game as they do passing yards. Usually, when a team can run the ball for over 180 yards per game, they are winning games. In this matchup, the pace will drive this game to crazy yardage statistics. The Cardinals play so fast that the 49ers will have the ball often in this one and likely surpass their points per game of 29 points. The Cardinals allow over 425 yards a game and the 49ers should be able to annihilate them tonight on the ground.
