Sunday Night Football: Week 8 Preview

Sunday Night Football for Week 8 pits the Packers against the Chiefs in what would have been a great game to look forward to, had there not been a significant injury to one of the teams. Nonetheless, this article will break down all the ins-and-outs of the Sunday Night Football matchup including my betting takes, injuries, and some predictions.

Betting

With the news that a certain someone will not play tonight, the Packers odds have increased to -5.5 (-110) on the spread and -250 on the moneyline. Also, the total has dipped down to O/U 47.5 points (-110 on either) so we’ll in line for a low-scoring Packers victory according to sportsbooks. Personally, I really like this spread number. The Packers should be able to attack the poor Chiefs defense and stop them on offense without their star QB. I’ve also got some action on Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams to hit the OVER on their rushing yards props. Lastly, LeSean McCoy OVER 2.5 receptions should be easy money.

Injuries

So, about that star QB, Patrick Mahomes is OUT with a knee injury. Not only that but starting O-lineman Andrew Wylie with tonight’s game too. This leaves backup QB Matt Moore in a tough situation, at least he’ll have the full arsenal of weapons though. On defense, the Chiefs will be down to 6 D-lineman as starters Chris Jones and Frank Clark have been ruled out. If that were not enough, Darren Lee is questionable to play and Kendall Fuller is out which thins an already bad pass defense.

Most notably for the Packers, Davante Adams is currently DOUBTFUL to play as he is still nursing a toe injury. Also on offense, starting lineman Corey Linsley is questionable to play and depth TE Robert Tonyan is doubtful. I’d argue that Linsley not playing is more impactful than Adams missing another week for this Packers offense. Meanwhile for the Packers defense, starters Blake Martinez and Darnell Savage are questionable to play. Martinez is one of the best linebackers in football so if he misses action tonight, that opens up the middle of the field for the Chiefs.

Chiefs Offense vs. Packers Defense

Throw out all of the stats for this Chiefs offense tonight. This team is far less explosive with Moore under center instead of the former MVP, Pat Mahomes. The plus side is that the Chiefs still have their full array of explosive pass-catchers available to attack the Packers. The primary source of targets in this game will be Travis Kelce as the Packers are allowing the 9th-most fantasy points to opposing TE’s this season. Other than that, LeSean McCoy will likely receive plenty of check-down work as the Packers are one of the best teams against opposing receivers and QB’s so far in 2019. Keep in mind, if Martinez misses tonight’s game, Kelce could single-handily keep the Chiefs in this one.

Packers Offense vs. Chiefs Defense

The Packers are finally hitting their stride on offense and it is coming without star receiver Davante Adams. We can see the MVS has developed into a premier big-play wideout in the NFL and a guy that Aaron Rodgers can rely on to get open down the field. Not only that, but the Packers have settled in on a 2-headed attack out of the backfield with Jones and Williams. Similar to the Chiefs attacking the Packers with their TE tonight, the Packers should do the same with their running backs. The Chiefs allow the 9th-most fantasy points to opposing RB’s and the game script will likely have the Packers running the ball more than usual because of the Chiefs QB play.
