In our fourth entry of the countdown to the NBA season, another long shot MVP candidate is the topic of discussion. This time, we head north of our last candidate and into Atlanta where a promising young guard looks to break out during his sophomore season.
#21 Trae Young
Point Guard, Atlanta Hawks
Trae Young was electric as a rookie this past season and his play earned him All-Rookie honors as well as the runner-up for the Rookie of the Year award behind Luka Doncic. Young really hit his stride down the final stretch of the season as he began challenging Doncic for the ROY award and started scoring in bunches. With a 49(!) point game to his name already, Young has shown to be a relentless scorer that is not afraid to pull the trigger from anywhere on the court. Unfortunately for Young, he plays for one of the worst teams in the entire NBA. MVP voters usually want to see that a guy can carry his team to victories throughout the season and we have yet to see that from Young so far in his career. With a PER of 17.3, Young was 97th in the NBA last season (out of 361) and right above the league average of 15.00. Trae Young will need to cut back on his high turnover rate if he wants to prove that he can hang with the top dogs of the NBA.
Young is currently at +10000 (Bovada) to win the NBA MVP award. Do you think Young will win the MVP? Let me know in the comments below!
